Two historic names, one new beginning — the Royal Ark Mariner Lodges of Darlington and Stockton unite to forge a stronger future.
The names Stockton and Darlington are synonymous with the beginning of the railway age. In September 1825, the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway ushered in a new era of steam-powered transport. Two centuries later, in 2026, those same names have once again been brought together to begin a new journey — this time in Royal Ark Masonry.
In a landmark first for the Province of Durham, the Royal Ark Mariner Lodges of Darlington and Stockton amalgamated to form the Darlington and Stockton Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No. 250.
It was an evening of celebration, poignancy and optimism as brethren from both Lodges came together to secure the future of Royal Ark Masonry in their building.
A shared vision:
The decision to amalgamate was not taken lightly. Both Lodges had proud histories, but declining membership had prompted their members to consider how those traditions could be preserved while creating a sustainable future.
Following discussions between the Lodges and considerable work behind the scenes, supported by the Provincial Executive, the brethren agreed that the time was right to join forces.
The spirit of unity was evident from the outset. The Lodge room was full as the Provincial Grand Master, David Hanson, and his assisting officers received a warm welcome, with brethren of both Lodges already seated together.
Following the opening of a Provincial Assembly, the amalgamation ceremony was conducted by the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, Michael Davis.
The final separate business of the two Lodges was completed before the amalgamation warrant was read, formally establishing the new Lodge. An oration by the Provincial Deputy Grand Chaplain, Paul O’Doherty reflected upon the shared vision and importance of fraternal accord, followed by the traditional ceremonial aspects of the Order.
A new Commander:
With the two Lodges now united, Simon Andrew Radonicich was installed as the first Worshipful Commander of the new Lodge by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Michael Wilkinson. He then appointed and invested the remaining officers.
At the request of the new Lodge, the Provincial Officers who had assisted with the amalgamation were also admitted as honorary members — a fitting expression of appreciation for their support.
The formal proceedings were followed by a festive board, where brethren, guests and the Provincial team celebrated the occasion in an atmosphere of friendship and optimism.
Provincial Grand Master David Hanson paid tribute to the initiative of the brethren, recognising that their decision to unite would help revitalise Royal Ark Masonry in the area. He also stressed the importance of attracting new members to build upon the foundations now established. He particularly praised Michael Davis and the Provincial team for their work in making the amalgamation possible.
A journey into the future:
The creation of the Darlington and Stockton Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No. 250 is about more than bringing two Lodges together. It demonstrates how tradition can be preserved by embracing change and working collectively towards a common future.
The symbolism of the two names could hardly be more appropriate. In 1825, Stockton and Darlington helped usher in a new age of progress. In 2026, those names once again stand together at the beginning of a new journey.
As David Hanson said:
“This marks the start of an exciting new chapter in the story of Royal Ark Masonry here in the Province of Durham. Lodges come into existence and some Lodges close, but the strength of our Order is not with the number of Lodges but with our membership.
“The brethren of the Darlington and Stockton Lodges have taken action and are forging ahead with a new, stronger vision for our Province. This new Lodge’s future is very bright and should be an example to all in what can be achieved.”
Two historic names. One Lodge. A new journey ahead.
