The Mark Province of Cheshire has recently returned from a memorable visit to Varna, Bulgaria, combining Mark Masonry, friendship, fellowship and the opportunity to experience a little of Bulgarian culture along the way.
Accompanied by a number of wives and partners, the Cheshire contingent made the most of their time in Varna. Away from the Masonic programme there was an opportunity to explore the city, visit the seafront and local landmarks, sample the local food and hospitality, and simply enjoy one another’s company.
As the main event approached, the Cheshire Brethren turned their attention to the work ahead. A full rehearsal was held, running through the ceremony from beginning to end and ensuring everyone was ready for what was to be a particularly busy and important Saturday. The Brethren were warmly welcomed by their hosts from Mersey Mark Lodge, whose friendship and hospitality were greatly appreciated throughout the visit.
Saturday became the focal point of the trip, with a packed programme comprising an Advancement Ceremony, an Open Door presentation and a Centenary Celebration.
The Cheshire Brethren delivered an excellent performance throughout, demonstrating a tremendous standard of ritual, teamwork and commitment.
A particular mention must go to Bro. James Williams, who, despite having attended only two meetings since his own Advancement, delivered the Junior Overseer’s ritual with remarkable confidence and professionalism. His performance was one of the highlights of the day and was a tremendous achievement for a relatively new Mark Mason.
The Open Door presentation also provided an important opportunity for non-Mark Masons to gain an insight into the degree, its character and the friendship that exists within Mark Masonry, and was very well received with interest being shown in joining the Lodge, and requests from our Bulgarian and Romanian brethren for a copy of that presentation, for their own possible use.
After a long but hugely rewarding day, everyone came together for a superb Festive Board, where the Brethren were joined by their wives and partners, together with those non-Mark Masons who had attended the Open Door presentation. It was the perfect conclusion to the day, filled with good food, laughter and fellowship.
The visit to Varna demonstrated everything that is special about Mark Masonry. Excellent ritual was certainly at its heart, but equally important were the friendships strengthened, the new friendships formed and the opportunity to share Mark Masonry beyond provincial and national boundaries.
The Mark Province of Cheshire can be extremely proud of the way its Brethren represented the Province throughout the visit, and sincere thanks must go to our hosts for the welcome and hospitality extended to everyone who travelled.
A truly memorable few days in Bulgaria and an experience that those involved will undoubtedly remember for many years to come.
Friendship, fellowship and Mark Masonry at its very best.
